Wild Animals I Have Known

Polk Street Diaries and After

by Kevin Bentley

Green Candy, $12.95 paperback

Reviewed by Kaizaad Kotwal

Retro is in, particularly if it's from the 70s and 80s. To those who grew up in that era, it is a humbling idea to realize that those two decades are, more often that not, referred to as history today.

Kevin Bentley takes a wild ride back to those days of bell bottoms and hippie shirts, the age of pre-AIDS sexual hedonism, to a time when there was a massive migration of young gay men to San Francisco. It was the pinnacle of sex, drugs and rock and roll. These men took off in the 1970s from all corners of America, and in the true spirit of pioneers before them, they made the arduous journey to the promised land. They architects of th gay mecca that is San Francisco today. They traveled there by plane, bus, Ford Pinto or VW Beetle, paying their way or hitching rides. They found their first jobs in San Fran as waiters and bookstore clerks. But most of all they found themselves in the thick of guy hedonism unrivaled before or since.

Bentley was one of the men who went on this incredible voyage out wet. Luckily, Lic kepta diary of his journey his experiences, and his growth as a gay man. The diary starts in 1977 when Bentley was merely 2 and the last entries of the book are around the time when he turned 40.

The first entry sets up the roots of his journey in a frank and moving manner "very boy or girl must make a break and leave home sooner or later." he win

11 or she is gay, it's probably sooner and a bit further. One day! was finishing up summe session courses and dreading student teaching in the fall, and the next was following the back Magic Markered route on a series of creased highway maps to San Franciscoma red. 69VW with my worldly possessions in the back seat and $300 in traveler's checks in my >ock. My crime? I'd met a man at the pet shop and stayed out all night again.

Maybe you'll be happy where there are others like you, Mom said, wiping her eyes, Queer! Fairy! Faggot! said Dad.”

The book is first and foremost an erotic biography of a man coming of age and coming into his own sexuality, but embedded in the sexual exploits of this man one can excavat a wealth of other information sociological, cultural, political, radical, and the extremely extremely personal.

There is a lot of humor in the book, both wry and laugh-out-loud. There are touching moments, filled with human longing and unrequited dreams. And there's plenty of erotic fodder, lusty, lurid, passionate and provocative.

Because the book traverses the geography of time from August 13. 1977 to November 30, 1996, there is much in the book that is not history, but the very recent past.

The diary entries from the earlyand mid-1980s, when AIDS was becoming a sepulchral reality, are interesting. AIDS is not as prevalent in the diary as one would imagine, given the culture of hedonism that it emerges from. And yet, in subtle ways, Bentley weaves in changes in the mores and attitudes of the times when AIDS entered the lives of gay men in a very palpable way.

In the book's press kit Bentley explains, "There are several breaks in the narrative when I was going through caregiving and grieving with two lovers who died. Partly, what was happening was too painful to record, partly, that's just another story. But HIV isn't ignored.

The book, although a collection of diary entries, reads like a novel, littered with leading and supporting characters, flooded with twists and turns of the human heart, and with the suspense of what is next to come. There is a sense of nostalgia that envelopes that book, purely out of circumstance, solely out of necessity. And throughout the book, from the debauchery of the 1970s and early 1980s, to the cautious safe-sex period following, Bentley's book is infused with an undeniable sense of joie de vivre.

Bentley's book, although about a very specific journey, made by a unique individual in a varied spectrum of years, will be identifiable reading for readers from another milieu. in another time. At the heart of the book are the universal longings for love and lasting fendship and the equally universal journeys of pain through isolation, rejection and loss of love and fellow-men. And for those of us, whose sex lives have been curtailed or even censored by the pandemic of AIDS, Bentley's journey allows us to live voyeuristically, vicariously in ways that we may not dare to live today. So even though the book is about wild animals in a very wild time, the tamer amongst us, will and ourselves reflected therem.

Diaries, in many ways, are the individual writers stabs at anortality. Many never the light of publishing day, and yet, those personal entries are furryer frozen in time. The frontispiece to the book, by Moses Old Bull, is poignant and prescient

It says, "We come to you as from the dead. The things about which you ask us have been dead to us for many years. In bringing them to our minds we are calling them from the dead, and when we have told you about
